Jump to RecipeStaff Taco History
Here at Dulcet Scintilla we have been eating tacos since childhood. Fun FACT: Tacos have been around since the 18th century, WOW!
It’s such a versatile and fun thing to eat and make. Growing up, we definitely used the store-brought taco packs and taco-kits. Over time we have elevated our palate and found that making things from scratch are better. As well as slowly integrating flavor and spices can really change the flavor profile and overall taste of any taco dish. Whether it’s vegan, vegetarian, or a meat version of tacos.
Gluten Free Tortilla Options
Like mentioned in the previous section, just like tacos, the tortillas used are also versatile! The base of your taco is completely up to you, but to help ease the process here’s a short list of our go-to’s:
- Siete Tortillas
- The tortillas are amazing! Available in crunchy and soft and if you did not know it’s gluten-free (obviously), vegan, and all that good stuff. So, give it a try if you’re in a rush.
- Vegetable
- Whether you choose to use lettuce, cabbage, or collard greens. We highly suggest the use of sturdy vegetables that can handle all of the goodness inside the taco veggie shell alternative.
- Homemade Corn Tortillas
- Of course making your own tortillas is always going to be a win-win situation. Just grab a little water, salt, masa, vegan fat (i.e., coconut oil, EVOO, etc). Mix it all up, let it rest, use the presser, and pan-frying. For more deets, click here.
Vegan Taco Substitutions
Not a huge fan of meat substitutions? Well, here’s another short list of other alternatives, that are just as great!
- BBQ Onions: This option is a MUST. Takes a minute, but its totally worth the wait. It’s smoky and tasty and would make killer tacos. For the BBQ onion recipe, click here.
- Mushrooms: A hearty meat substitute that is just as versatile as the tortilla. Some options to jazz up the mushrooms includes: soy sauce marinade, smoky mushrooms, lemon pepper mushrooms (just to name a few).
