How is it purple?
This beautiful color is achieved from the use of herbal tea. What herbal tea?
Our purple delight uses a caffeine-free herbal tea called butterfly pea flower. Which can be found at stores like Amazon, Walmart, World Market, and Etsy. The butterfly pea flower plant grows naturally in the Southeast Asia region.
Science TIME!!!
Now you’re probably wondering how does this tea color go from purple to blue? What kind of magic show is this?
The cool part about the tea is that the color changes based on the pH level. In chemistry, the “pH” number is based on the “potential of hydrogen” or the “power of hydrogen”. It is a scale that specifies the acidity or basicity of aqueous solutions.
Basically, if you wanted to a make blue delight, just wait for the color of the tea to fully develop (may time a few minutes). But, if acidity such as lime juice or lemon juice is added to the tea the color will become purple. The longer the pea leaves are left in the acidic water, the deeper the color.
Making the Purple Delight
Ready to make a cocktail? Alright….let’s get started!!!
First, make a simple syrup. This well help create a well balanced cocktail. To a saucepan add equal amounts of water and sugar. Place this saucepan of medium-high heat and allow the sugar to completely dissolve. Remove from the heat. And add in a few teaspoons of butterfly pea flower leaves as well as a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. After that, in a cocktail shaker add a handful of fresh blueberries and muddle them. Now that the blueberries are muddled add a few thinly sliced lemons to the shaker. Quickly muddle the lemon slices. Once completed, pour in the vodka, purple simple syrup, and ice. Shake things up! Lastly, pour the drink into a glass and if desired add a little blue curacao.
Without delay drink!
Tips to styling a Cocktail
Of course we are going to share some styling tips.
- First tip, use unique ice. Instead of using the crush ice or weird shaped ice from the freezer. Reach for unique shaped ice trays (via Amazon) such as diamonds, cubes, long rectangles.
- Garnishes. When it comes to garnishing the drink try to use different shapes and colors that compliment the drink. For an example, in the photos you’ll notice lemon slices, blueberries, flowers, and a metal cocktail pick. These different elements make the cocktail pop overall by enhancing the appearance.
- Glassware. Sometimes cocktails stand out more in non-traditional glassware. So what’s traditional glassware? This type of glassware includes wine glasses, champagne flutes, margarita glass, etc. Instead of using wine glasses use a tall tumbler or stemless wine glasses.
And that’s all folks!
