Sticky Korean glazed chicken drumsticks are feasible, incredibly delicious, sticky, sweet, and everything great! This recipe is simple, easy, and resembles a classic BBQ chicken with an Asian twist.
The Ingredients
Let’s get into the ingredients needed for these incredible drumsticks include:
- Chicken Drumsticks – You’ll need about 10 drumsticks for this recipe.
- Sesame Seed Oil – This oil provides a nutty flavor to the glaze sauce and just a pinch of this goes a long way.
- Cornstarch – The addition of cornstarch helps thicken the sauce. But, if cornstarch is not available, feel free to substitute with rice flour, wheat flour, or xanthan gum.
- Rice Vinegar – This vinegar is added for a mild sightly sweet flavor. The rice vinegar also provides a tangy flavor to sauce.
- Brown sugar – Of course a homemade bbq sauce is not complete without brown sugar. We recommend the use of dark brown sugar to cut the tangy flavor from the vinegar. The sugar provides a subtle sweetness.
- Soy sauce – An Asian bbq sauce is in desperate need of soy sauce. Which kind of soy sauce? That’s up to you…..we are all living through a pandemic right now. So rather you have light, dark, regular, low sodium soy sauce/tamari etc. Whatever kind of soy sauce you can get your hands on, feel free to use it.
- Seasonings – Lastly, let’s talk seasonings because under seasoned meat and sauces is simply the worst. What is used? Red pepper flakes, freshly ground black pepper, minced garlic, minced ginger, onion powder, paprika, and sesame seeds.
Making the Sticky Glaze Sauce
Briefly let’s talk about this amazing sauce. In a small saucepan, add in the sesame oil and cornstarch. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to thicken. Next, add in the seasonings, soy sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar. Give the mixture a quick whisk. Heat the sauce for roughly 2-5 minutes. Once the sauce thickens, remove from the heat.
Chicken Drumsticks Time!
Now drum roll please……the sauce is ready and it’s time to make the chicken drumsticks. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 pan with cooking spray, this is to prevent the chicken or sauce from sticking to the pan. Lightly season all sided on the drumsticks with salt and pepper. Then drizzle half of the sauce onto the drumsticks. Bake the chicken drumsticks for 45-60 minutes. Feel free to use the remaining sauce for dipping or pour it over the chicken and broil for 1-5 minutes.
